Press Release, June 2011
7th International Conference on Urban Pests to be held in Brazil
Building on the success of the six previous conferences, and only held once every three years, the next International Conference on Urban Pests (ICUP) is to be held for the first time in South America. It will take place between 7-10 August in the World Heritage site, as designated by UNESCO, of Ouro Preto, Brazil.
This triennial conference offers an excellent forum for the exchange of ideas and information on the biology and control of pests in urban environments. At the previous conferences, delegates include prominent entomologists, pest management and chemical professionals, university scientists and authorities from all over the world.
The programme will cover the full range of international urban pests, ranging from ants, houseflies, mosquitoes, termites, cockroaches and bedbugs, to spiders, scorpions, rodents and bats. Issues such as global legislation, insecticide resistance and the future of urban pest research will also be covered. In addition to the platform sessions, there will also be poster presentations.
Plenary, general sessions and workshops will have simultaneous translation (English/Portuguese/English).
In addition to the conference plenary sessions, there are special workshops were the active participation of delegates is sought. The workshop on 8 August will be a pest control operator day with the emphasis on updates on urban pests, whereas the workshop running between 9-10 August will discuss pests in historic buildings.
As at previous ICUP Conferences, delegates will receive a bound copy of the Proceedings, containing the text of all presentations.
There will also be time for informal discussion between delegates, social events such as the conference dinner to be held at the Gold Mine as well as opportunities to explore the stunning sites of Ouro Preto.
Ouro Preto is one of the best conserved historic cities of Brazil. Founded at the end of the 17th century, Ouro Preto (meaning black gold) is a small town in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, a former colonial mining town located in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains and designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO because of its outstanding Baroque architecture. As Ana Eugênia de Carvalho Campos, the conference chairperson explains: “We selected Ouro Preto not only for the beauty of the town and the environs, but also because it has affordable hotels and is well known for its warm hospitality.”
For international travellers, the nearest airport is Belo Horizonte - Tancredo Neves/Confins International Airport. There are direct international flights to Belo Horizonte airport from Europe (Lisbon and Paris), North America (Miami) and from Central America (Panama). There are frequent flights from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro. The conference organisers will arrange for coach transfer buses from Belo Horizonte airport to Ouro Preto. These will either be at a reasonable price, or possibly free, depending on sponsorship.
Delegates are encouraged to take advantage of the early registration discount before 17 March 2011. The rate for a full registration for the entire ICUP conference is $500 or $200 for full-time students. Or, attendance at the two workshops only is $200 per workshop.
The organisers have appointed the travel agency Mac Viagens to assist with air tickets, hotel accommodation and transportation (see the website).
